Atlantic Salmon – River Dee
The river Dee flows 81 miles from its source in the Cairgorms it flows through Royal Deeside and the villages of Braemar, Ballater, Aboyne, Kincardine O’Neil, Banchory and enters the North Sea in Aberdeen harbour. The Dee is predominately a salmon river.
Wild Brown trout, Salmon and Sea Trout – River Don
Also rising in the Cairngorms, the Don flows approx. 81 miles reaching the north Sea just north of Aberdeen. It is the 6th largest river in Scotland with a catchment of 1312 sq/km. Whilst having a reputation for great salmon and sea trout fishing, the reason why most anglers visit the Don is its amazing wild brown trout.
Salmon, Sea Trout and Wild Brown trout – river Deveron
The Deveron has a well -deserved reputation as a top-class salmon river boasting the largest fish caught on the fly by Clementine “Tiny” Morrison is 1924 weighing in at 61lbs.
The River Deveron is also well known for high quality wild brown trout fishing regularly producing specimens over 5 lbs

Please note
- fishing for Atlantic Salmon and sea trout is not permitted on a Sunday (due to Scottish Law) and
- the Rivers Dee, Don and Deveron are all 100% Catch and Release for salmon and sea trout.
Loch Fishing
There are a number of Stillwater lochs in the area which aRe stocked with trout and are open all year (weather permitting) to fish for trout.
You can purchase permits on the day you would like to fish and most provide a hire service for tackle. Most fisheries offer a Catch and release permit.
New to fly fishing
There is no free fishing on the rivers Dee, Don or Deveron.
Permits (or rods) are purchased from local landowners. When you purchase a permit (rod) it gives you with permission to fish. NB no rods, reels, flies or waders are supplied.
If you don’t have access to the fishing tackle you will need, it might be worth considering booking a guided fishing package with one of the local providers.
They will use their knowledge of the river and plan the best possible fishing experience to fit in with your requirements. They will supply equipment, recommend where to fish seasonally, and arrange everything for you.
Experienced Fly Fisher
Each river has managed beats long its course.
You can book your rod on the beat either through the landowners or Fishpal.
Some beats employ a resident Ghillie, others don’t.
If you wish to travel light there are outfitters who provide a hire service for any equipment you require
To prevent the spread of parasites and disease, the River Dee is the only Scottish river with its own dedicated Disinfection Station. This facility is free to use for visiting anglers to disinfect their equipment and a certificate of disinfection is provided.
